Mum_small Everybody needs a hero or two.   It’s All Saints Day today in the church.   The day we remember our heros.  The day we remember that life exists beyond what we can see with human eyes.   The day we remember that our heroes still live on.   And on this high-holy day, I can’t help but think of one of my favorite heroes: our friendly neighborhood, Spiderman.

Aunty May says to Peter during the second film (as Peter struggles with who he has been called to be),  "…kids like Henry need a hero. Courageous, self-sacrificing people. Setting examples for all of us. Everybody loves a hero. People line up for them, cheer them, scream their names. And years later, they’ll tell how they stood in the rain for hours just to get a glimpse of the one who taught them how to hold on a second longer. I believe there’s a hero in all of us, that keeps us honest, gives us strength, makes us noble, and finally allows us to die with pride, even though sometimes we have to be steady, and give up the thing we want the most…"

I love heroes.  I love the saints.  In part because they remind me that I am called to more;  I am called to continue to rise above; I am called to wear the costume and play the role that God has ordained for me… and in the words of Spiderman, they remind me that "the choice to lead an ordinary life is no longer an option."

Heroes.  Saints.   Those whom walk with us whether we can see them or not.  Ordinary people who rise to extraodinary things.   Pilgrims who inspire and cheer us on to greater thingsand a fuller life where ordinary is no longer an option.

So to my heroes:  Therese; Cuthbert; Aidan; Julian; Augstine; CS Lewis; Madeliene L’engle; Henri; Rob Bell; Bono; Princess Diana; Grandad; Grandma; Hawley, Helen, John Willison; Jackie Mattisse; Bishop Thompson; Bob; Christy; Ruth; Amy Grant; Nita; Dixon; Ali; Cynthia; Ed; my brother; Brenda; mum and dad.

O God of grace and glory, I remember before you this day my heroes.  I thank you for giving them to me, to know and to love as a companion on my earthly pilgrimage.  I pray for all those I love, especially those I see no more.  Grant them each your peace; let light perpetual shine upon and them and in your loving wisdom and almighty power, work in them the good purpose of your perfect will; through Jesus Christ our Lord.   Amen.

so maybe today is not just about remembering our heroes; but it’s also about remembering the hero within who’s readying to leap from rooftops and swing between buildings.

I love blockbuster hits, like Spiderman, because they remind me of the worlds yearning for heroes.

They remind me that yes it is true, everybody needs a hero
